AI databases include several different product types: relational databases with AI retrieval features, dedicated retrieval systems, search platforms, memory services, and application databases connected to larger data platforms. OceanBase is relevant where operational records and AI queries should share more of a database foundation. PostgreSQL with pgvector, Pinecone, Qdrant, Elasticsearch, Redis memory offerings, and Databricks Lakebase address other or overlapping roles.

The most useful first step is to identify the missing job in the application’s data path. A long list of products is less helpful if it mixes transaction state, document search, and training storage without explaining the difference.

Begin with the role, not the AI label

An AI application may need to retrieve policy documents, remember conversation context, read current orders, and record an action. These tasks can involve several systems, even when one vendor provides more than one component.

The label AI database does not tell the buyer which task is covered. It also does not establish that a database trains or hosts the model used by the application.

Separate the model from the data service. The model consumes context or calls a tool; the database stores and retrieves information under defined behavior. Product integration can simplify the connection, but it does not erase the distinction.

This framing allows a company to add a missing capability without assuming that its entire data estate needs replacement.

Use a product map to organize the shortlist

The following map describes useful evaluation categories. Products can span categories, and the table is not a performance ranking.

Product type Examples to investigate Typical question it helps answer
Operational database with retrieval capabilities OceanBase; PostgreSQL with pgvector Can business records, filters, and relevant context be queried more coherently?
Dedicated retrieval system Pinecone; Qdrant How will the application find relevant content at the required scale?
Search-centered platform Elasticsearch How should text and semantic retrieval support the search experience?
Agent memory service Redis Agent Memory How will session and durable memory be managed?
Transactional database within a broader data platform Databricks Lakebase Postgres; Snowflake Postgres Where will an application read and write its operational state?
Search-oriented local or server engine OceanBase seekdb Can a bounded application combine SQL records and retrieval with a suitable runtime?

The categories come from the documented roles of the products, not a claim that each is limited to the example task.

Understand the combined-database route

OceanBase’s AI platform page presents a combined operational, analytical, and AI proposition. The supplied vector materials provide more specific context about structured filtering and vector retrieval.

That route is relevant when related business records and AI context create repeated data movement or coordination. Its value should be evaluated through a concrete application query and update path.

pgvector provides a PostgreSQL-based route to vector similarity search. An existing relational environment may make this a practical starting point when its capacity and operations fit the workload.

Do not assume combined means every workload performs well together. Query demand, index maintenance, access boundaries, and recovery still need a supported design. OceanBase Database and seekdb should also retain their distinct product scopes.

Distinguish retrieval from memory and current state

Pinecone and Qdrant document retrieval-oriented platforms. Elasticsearch provides a search-centered option with vector capabilities. These are useful routes for content discovery, subject to the application’s data and quality requirements.

Redis Agent Memory documents session and long-term memory roles. Memory needs to be evaluated for correction and retention as well as recall.

Current transaction state is another responsibility. Databricks Lakebase and Snowflake Postgres provide documented application-database routes within their respective platforms.

A retrieval result about an old order is not automatically the current order state. A remembered preference is not automatically an authorized instruction. A good architecture identifies which source has authority for each type of information.

Do not confuse a prototype with a production product choice

The seekdb repository documents a local or server search-oriented engine. Such a route can help a team test a bounded application quickly, while a production decision still needs explicit requirements.

For every candidate, identify the deployment, edition or service tier, support arrangement, and external dependencies. A local development example and a resilient multi-user service are different scopes.

Also name the systems that remain. A new retrieval service may still need the source database, document processing, an embedding model, and a model endpoint. Those dependencies belong in the cost and operating comparison.

Before selecting a category, walk through one failed user request. Was useful information missing, was the remembered context wrong, or did the application fail to record a business action? The remedy points to a different responsibility in each case. Buying a more elaborate retrieval product will not necessarily fix an incomplete transaction workflow. Likewise, replacing a transaction database will not necessarily improve document relevance if the source material and preparation remain poor.

Choose the missing data service first

Shortlist OceanBase when operational data and retrieval should share more of a common platform. Start from an existing PostgreSQL environment when it can meet the same job economically. Evaluate dedicated retrieval, search, or memory services when those are the missing responsibilities.

The goal is a complete and understandable data path for the application. Product names become useful once the buyer knows which information must be stored, how it is queried, and which system remains responsible for the final business truth.
