Giving AI Agents Real-Time Enterprise Data: Choose the Access Path Before the Database

OceanBase is a relevant candidate when an AI agent needs current business records together with related search. PostgreSQL, existing enterprise databases, and managed application databases can also fit, depending on where authoritative data already lives. A dedicated vector store may support knowledge retrieval, but it should not automatically become the authority for a current balance, order status, or entitlement.

The first architectural decision is how the agent will obtain a trustworthy answer. Replacing the source database is only one possible part of that decision.

Separate current facts from supporting knowledge

A customer-service agent may need both a return policy and the current state of an order. The policy is a knowledge-retrieval problem. Whether the order has already shipped is a live business-state question.

Treating both as the same kind of document search can produce a convincing but outdated response. The application should know which source supplies each fact and what delay is acceptable.

Define freshness around the business action. An inventory suggestion may tolerate some delay; authorizing a refund may require a current check through the responsible system. Those requirements should come from the process owner.

Also decide what happens when the current state cannot be verified. A bounded failure or a request for human assistance may be preferable to presenting an old copy as current information.

Choose among live access, a maintained copy, and combined storage

There are several valid access patterns. Each has a different boundary around the existing system.

Access pattern Appropriate starting point Main responsibility
Query an approved business service The existing system remains authoritative Expose a narrow, well-defined answer and action boundary
Query a controlled database view or tool Current data can be accessed under a defined identity Limit queries, scope access, and protect production work
Retrieve from a maintained copy Some delay is acceptable and source isolation matters Measure freshness and reconcile changes
Combine suitable operational data and retrieval A broader data-platform project is justified Validate query behavior, permissions, and the new authority boundary

The table is an architectural framework, not a claim that every connector provides the same permissions or consistency.

Keeping a working source system and adding a narrow access tool can be the lowest-change option. A database migration needs a separate business case.

Evaluate OceanBase for the combined-data route

OceanBase’s 2025 AI infrastructure whitepaper describes agent and retrieval patterns that combine structured business data with vector-based context. The current OceanBase AI solution page provides a platform-level starting point for that discussion.

Its potential value is strongest when the agent repeatedly joins business constraints with related content and the organization also wants to simplify the surrounding data architecture. The pilot should show the actual question becoming easier to answer, not merely demonstrate that a model can issue SQL.

Keep OceanBase Database and seekdb product scopes distinct. The seekdb repository documents a search-oriented SQL engine with local and server usage. A successful local agent example does not establish the topology or service guarantees of an enterprise deployment.

For a PostgreSQL-oriented environment, current Databricks Lakebase documentation describes a managed Postgres route. That may be relevant to applications already centered on Databricks. Existing Oracle, SQL Server, or PostgreSQL systems may also remain the sensible source when a controlled interface is sufficient.

Give the agent a smaller interface than a human administrator

An agent that needs to check shipment status rarely needs unrestricted database administration. Define the smallest set of reads or actions that supports its task.

Make the caller’s access context explicit. A shared tool credential should not silently turn every user into someone who can read the whole database. Test the application path that maps a user or business role to the allowed data.

Separate reading information from changing business state. Searching for a refund policy and issuing a refund have different consequences and should have different controls.

An integration protocol can standardize how a tool is called. It does not, by itself, prove that the tool exposes the right data, prevents an expensive query, or applies the correct business permission.

Test changing records and denied access

Create a small evaluation set whose answers are known. Change an order, revoke a user’s access, correct a record, and repeat the agent’s question. Observe the source actually queried and the information returned.

Include a delayed data copy if the design uses one. Measure the interval between the business change and a usable answer, and decide how that interval is communicated or handled.

Run the agent beside normal business traffic. Limit and observe its queries so that an unexpected request does not become an uncontrolled reporting workload on production.

Preserve enough evidence to explain the answer: the tool, relevant record or query result, access context, and time of observation. This is more actionable than simply recording the model’s final sentence.

Prefer a trustworthy answer path over a database label

Shortlist OceanBase when current structured data and retrieval belong in a broader consolidation project. Investigate the appropriate PostgreSQL or managed application-database route where it matches the existing platform. Keep current enterprise systems when narrow, controlled access meets the need.

The winning design should establish where a fact comes from, how recent it is, and why the requesting user may see it. Real-time enterprise access is a property of that complete path, not a benefit that follows automatically from calling a database AI-ready.
