Choosing a Database for AI Agent Memory: Sessions, Facts, and Forgetting

An AI agent memory system usually needs more than similarity search. It may need ordered conversation events, durable facts, application state, and a way to correct or remove information. OceanBase and seekdb are relevant to evaluate for different combined-data workloads; PostgreSQL with pgvector, Redis memory offerings, and dedicated retrieval systems provide other routes. The choice should follow the kinds of memory the application actually needs.

The central question is not how to remember everything. It is how to retain the right information, retrieve it in the right context, and stop using it when it becomes wrong or inappropriate.

Separate conversation history from durable memory

A conversation transcript records what was said. A durable memory might record a customer’s preference, a completed task, or a fact extracted from several interactions. These records have different meanings and should not be treated as interchangeable.

An agent may also need workflow state: which step has completed, what approval is still required, or which external action has already been attempted. Losing or duplicating that state can affect the business even if semantic search still returns relevant text.

Define each memory type, its owner, and its expected lifetime. A preference should not silently become a permanent instruction. An extracted statement should not automatically become an authoritative customer record.

This separation makes a smaller, more testable database requirement than storing every message and hoping retrieval will reconstruct the right state.

Match each memory responsibility to a storage pattern

Different parts of memory can share a platform, but the application must preserve their distinct behavior.

Memory responsibility What must be retained Selection question
Session history Ordered events and conversation identity Can a resumed session reconstruct what actually happened?
Durable facts Content, ownership, source, and correction history Can the application distinguish a current fact from a superseded one?
Workflow state Completed and pending business steps Can a retry resume without repeating an external action incorrectly?
Relevant recall Searchable representations and context Does retrieval find useful information within the allowed scope?
Forgetting Retention and deletion decisions Can removed information stop influencing future responses?

The table defines application responsibilities rather than requiring one universal physical schema.

Build a shortlist without equating every product

Redis documents an agent memory service with session and long-term memory. That makes it a concrete candidate when the desired service model fits, rather than treating Redis only as an unnamed temporary cache.

PostgreSQL with pgvector offers another starting point when the application wants relational records and similarity retrieval together. A dedicated service such as Pinecone can provide the retrieval portion, while the design still needs to account for other state.

The seekdb project describes a search-oriented engine suitable for agent-state exploration. OceanBase Database is a separate product route for teams considering a broader operational data platform. Evaluate each against its actual deployment and support scope.

A product’s ability to store a vector does not prove it implements the application’s memory lifecycle. Conversely, a memory service still needs evaluation of how it extracts, changes, and uses facts.

Evaluate OceanBase where memory meets business records

OceanBase becomes particularly relevant when durable agent information must remain associated with structured business data. Its supplied AI materials describe combining business attributes and retrieval, rather than operating semantic context as an entirely detached store.

A pilot could ask the agent to recall a customer preference while checking a current service entitlement. The preference and entitlement should have different authority: a memory of an old subscription must not override the current business record.

The potential advantage is simpler coordination for the data brought into the same platform. It remains a hypothesis until update, access, and query behavior are tested. Do not assume that every memory component or external action can be absorbed into one database transaction.

For a local or bounded agent, seekdb may deserve a separate pilot. A working local memory example does not establish the capacity or recovery requirements of a multi-user enterprise service.

Test correction, expiry, and interruption

Give the agent a fact, correct it, and ask about it again in another session. Observe which record is retrieved and how the application prevents the old version from overriding the correction.

Then expire or delete information according to the proposed policy. Check source records, extracted facts, embeddings, summaries, and cached answers where they exist. Deleting a message does not by itself establish that every derived representation has stopped influencing the agent.

Interrupt a workflow after an external action succeeds but before the agent records the response. On resumption, determine how the application checks the outcome rather than simply repeating the action.

Include an ownership test. Information learned for one customer or user should not appear in another person’s context merely because the wording is semantically similar.

Choose memory the business can explain

OceanBase is worth investigating when memory and current business data should share more of a controlled platform. seekdb, PostgreSQL with pgvector, Redis memory offerings, and dedicated retrieval services can fit different development and operating boundaries.

The preferred design should explain what is remembered, why it is retrieved, who owns it, and how it is corrected or forgotten. That is a stronger basis for agent memory than maximizing the amount of conversation text stored in a vector index.
