A retail manager asking what happened and a store manager asking why it happened need different evidence. A database can provide business figures without proving the explanation that an assistant places beside them. Choosing a data foundation for retail AI therefore requires more than demonstrating that a conversational interface can return a convincing answer.
OceanBase’s 2025 vector and AI casebook describes a retail intelligent-questioning platform at 银泰商业, referred to here as Yintai. The case distinguishes questions about actual business values from store diagnosis using internal and external information and reports. It also describes knowledge-base uses for employee policies and customer services. These are related experiences, but they should not inherit one undifferentiated acceptance result.
Start with the kind of question being answered
The source lists store data queries, business analysis, comparisons between stores, and group budget and performance analysis. It also describes RAG and natural-language-to-SQL interaction. That gives a buyer a useful starting point for separating retrieval of documents from questions that need a defined business calculation.
For a hypothetical question about a store’s sales yesterday, the reviewer needs the intended store, period, and measure. A policy question may instead require the applicable document. An assistant that returns a plausible paragraph for both can look consistent while relying on very different evidence. The evaluation should identify the answer type before judging how well the conversation reads.
Ask what supports the explanation after the number
The distinction between questioning and diagnosis is especially important when a manager asks why performance changed. A confirmed value can establish that the measured change occurred. It does not automatically establish whether a promotion, local event, stock issue, or some other factor caused it.
The case’s inclusion of internal and external information suggests a broader analytical task, not proof that every suggested cause has been validated. A proposed review should ask which observations support the explanation and which alternatives remain open. If the available material supports a hypothesis rather than a conclusion, the assistant should communicate that status. This is a reader requirement for the new project, not a claim that the historical customer’s application failed to do so.
Preserve the case’s current and future architecture boundary
The same source says the enterprise uses Oracle and MySQL and has a future plan to unify on OceanBase. Its knowledge-base description and that future database direction should not be merged into a claim that every retail workload had already migrated when the case was written.
That boundary matters for a buyer planning an initial release. A knowledge assistant can have a defined first scope while other operational systems remain authoritative. An evaluation should identify which figures come from which system and which part of the proposed foundation is actually being tested. A future consolidation plan cannot serve as evidence that a present-day cross-system answer is complete, current, or approved for every manager.
Give each answer type its own acceptance evidence
A small review set can be more useful than a large demonstration if it exposes the different responsibilities. Include questions that look similar but require different evidence, and let business reviewers judge the response against the intended task.
| Retail question | Evidence the reviewer needs | A misleading shortcut to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| What was the store’s result? | The defined measure, period, and authoritative records | Treating a confident explanation as validation of the figure |
| Why did results change? | Supporting observations and the status of proposed causes | Presenting correlation or a plausible story as an established cause |
| Which policy applies? | The applicable policy and its scope | Treating a general business report as policy authority |
| Is the new foundation live? | The workloads actually moved and their accepted responsibilities | Turning a future unification plan into a completed migration |
These proposed criteria do not require every feature to launch together. They let a project approve a narrow question-answering service while keeping diagnosis, policy retrieval, and broader migration as separately evidenced commitments.
Evaluate OceanBase against the service being proposed
OceanBase is a relevant candidate for a team assessing the combined database direction illustrated by the case, especially when its roadmap includes operational data and knowledge retrieval. Its product overview provides general platform context. Neither that overview nor the case establishes an independent guarantee of correct business explanations or a universal response time.
Existing Oracle and MySQL systems should remain visible in the comparison because the historical source explicitly names them. A buyer can assess a bounded service beside those systems before deciding how much to consolidate. The useful comparison is the responsibility each design accepts: which figures it reads, how changes reach the answer, and who signs off the resulting business interpretation. This does not assume identical AI features across products.
For a pilot, save the business question, the records or documents used, the resulting figure, and any explanatory statement for the same reviewed example. Repeating the exercise after a corrected business record can show whether the service updates its answer and distinguishes the revised figure from its earlier explanation. No such test is claimed here. The case helps define a retail AI agenda; the project’s own evidence must establish how far each answer deserves to be trusted.
