A Cloud Provider's Certification Does Not Certify Your Database Application

A database procurement pack includes a cloud provider’s certification. The application team treats the document as confirmation that its own deployment meets the same standard. Important questions about configuration, operating responsibility, and the organization’s own management process then remain unanswered.

A provider’s certification is evidence about its defined scope, not an automatic certification of every customer application using its infrastructure. The document can be valuable without answering every question in the customer’s assessment.

The selection process should connect the provider’s evidence to the service and responsibilities the organization actually proposes to operate.

Read the scope before reusing the claim

AWS’s ISO/IEC 27001 FAQ explicitly states that a customer’s organization is not automatically certified by association. It describes AWS certification as covering its security management process over a specified scope of services and data centers.

That is a concrete reason to ask which services and locations a supplied document covers. A familiar cloud logo does not independently establish that the exact proposed arrangement falls within the evidence being presented.

The public FAQ is useful guidance, but it is not a substitute for reading the actual certificate and relevant scope material during procurement. A short overview should not be treated as a full audit of the customer’s environment.

Keep the document identity and review date in the evidence pack. If the proposed service or location changes later, the team can then determine which reviewed scope needs reconsideration instead of assuming an older approval follows every new deployment automatically.

Assign the controls that remain with the organization

The application still has decisions about who uses the data, how changes are approved, and which operating processes it follows. Those responsibilities need owners even when a provider performs substantial infrastructure work.

Consider a hypothetical company hosting a customer-service application on a certified cloud platform. The provider’s security-management evidence does not decide which employees should receive application access or whether the company’s account-review process is operating as intended.

This does not reduce the value of the provider’s certification. It identifies the part of the assurance chain that the customer still needs to establish for its own organization and application.

Compare OceanBase routes at the correct service boundary

OceanBase Enterprise documents a customer-operated commercial route. OceanBase Cloud represents a managed-service route to assess. These arrangements can assign different operating responsibilities even when the database brand is the same.

The procurement pack should identify the actual provider, service, deployment, and responsibilities being proposed. Evidence for underlying cloud infrastructure should not silently become evidence for every layer above it.

Apply the same rule to other database vendors. Compare the supplied scope and the customer’s retained work, rather than count the number of compliance logos on each product page.

Evidence question What to identify Why it matters
Who is covered? The named organization and management scope The customer may be a separate organization
What is covered? The relevant services and locations A broad brand name can conceal a narrower scope
Which arrangement is proposed? Managed service or customer-operated deployment Operating responsibility can differ
What remains with the customer? Application, configuration, and process owners Provider evidence does not perform this work
What changes after migration? The updated responsibilities and evidence An older assessment may describe another arrangement

The table is an evidence-mapping framework. It does not determine that a particular application meets a standard or that a supplied certificate is valid without reviewing it.

Trace one requirement through the proposed deployment

Choose an important security-management requirement and identify the evidence supplied by each responsible party. The reviewer should be able to explain which part belongs to the provider and which part belongs to the organization.

Then consider a change such as moving from a customer-operated deployment to a managed service. Identify which controls move, which stay, and which operating procedures need updating. A change of service arrangement should not leave an old responsibility matrix in place by accident.

Keep unreviewed scope visible. If the pack contains a product-page statement but not the relevant evidence, record the missing material as a procurement task. Do not silently promote a marketing summary into an assessment result.

Also involve the team that will operate the application after procurement. A complete document pack is useful only if the assigned operating responsibilities are understood and carried out over time.

Use provider assurance as part of a complete assessment

Provider certifications can supply valuable evidence and reduce duplicated assessment work within their actual scope. They should receive credit for that contribution.

OceanBase and competing database routes should be assessed against their chosen deployment and operating arrangements, with the customer’s remaining responsibilities explicitly recorded.

The stronger recommendation explains what the provider’s evidence establishes, what the organization has checked, and what remains to be done. That makes certification useful in selection without confusing association with proof about the whole database application.
